L&A was contracted to prepare remediation specifications and provide construction administration services for the removal of mercury-containing gymnasium flooring at the following facilities: Berliner Athletic Complex, Big Run Athletic Complex, Far East Community Center, Marion Franklin Community Center, McDonald Athletic Complex and Willis Athletic Complex. These projects were completed directly for the Recreation and Parks Department as part of public health initiatives or in concert with building renovation projects, where Lawhon acted in a subconsultant role to the Architect.
The scope of services included review of existing environmental documentation, confirmatory sampling to validate flooring systems contained mercury and development of site-specific remediation specifications to remove and dispose of mercury-containing flooring, hardwood flooring, plywood subfloor, polyurethane flooring, cove base, associated adhesives and/or portions of the concrete substrate. L&A assisted the Owner in the procurement and evaluation of bids and performed third party oversight during the remediation phase of each project. L&A also performed clearance sampling utilizing a Lumex Mercury Vapor Analyzer to document mercury concentrations were within acceptable limits prior to occupation of the space by construction trades and/or facility personnel.
