Ravenna Training and Logistic Site, Ohio
Lawhon and Associates,
Inc., conducted two Phase I archaeological reconnaissance surveys of 490
acres and 485 acres at the Ravenna Training and Logistics Site (formerly
the Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant), near Newton Falls, Ohio. The
archaeological surveys were conducted as part of Ohio Army National
Guard timber harvest activities planned for portions of these areas.
The survey area consisted of woodlots, most bounded by roads built or
incorporated into the original construction of the facility by the
government in the early 1940’s. Lawhon and Associates, Inc. developed a
predictive model based on the findings of previous surveys to guide
fieldwork methods and decisions within the different environments
encountered within the project area. The fieldwork consisted of visual
inspection of the entire project and shovel testing in selected areas as
determined by the predictive model and the discretion of the field
supervisor. A variety of disturbances were identified within the
project area, including modification of the landscape by the initial
construction of the facility, and a number of subsequent disturbances,
such as a quarry, two track roads, railroad beds, culverts, etc.
