American Electric Power Muskingum River Plant, Ohio
Lawhon & Associates, Inc.
conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey for American Electric
Power (AEP) in support of a proposed 490-acre landfill area to be
located south of the Muskingum River in The Village of Beverly,
Washington County, Ohio. The archaeological fieldwork for the landfill
project consisted of pedestrian survey, intensive shovel testing,
investigations of uninhabitable land surfaces, and GPS mapping to
identify archaeological sites within the proposed project area. The
fieldwork identified nine historic archaeological sites (all containing
historic artifacts from the 19th – 20th century)
and one prehistoric archaeological site. Morris Cemetery, within the
current project boundaries, was historically located within the property
of ‘J.C.A. Morris’ (1875 Titus, Simmons and Titus plat map) and is the
burial ground of the Morris family. The survey concluded the project
was unlikely to affect significant prehistoric or historic
archaeological resources, and the findings were accepted by the Ohio
Historic Preservation Office (OHPO).
