L&A Celebrates 30th Anniversary in 2015

Dr. William T. Lawhon, a family man, military veteran, scientist at Battelle Memorial Institute and entrepreneur, founded Lawhon & Associates in an office basement in Worthington, Ohio. What was born as a small horticultural research and development venture in 1985 has grown into one of Ohio’s most recognized environmental consulting and engineering firms. In the early years of L&A, Bill combined his innovative and entrepreneurial spirit with a strong passion to be responsive to client needs. This passion, coupled with the technical expertise of our environmental staff, serves as the cornerstone of L&A’s service today.

In 1987, as a result of industrial corporate restructurings, L&A branched into environmental property assessments. The professional relationship with, and trust of, Columbus Southern Power (AEP) and Borden Industries helped give the young company the opportunity to develop in an emerging market. Shortly after, in response to the EPA’s asbestos AHERA regulations, L&A hired additional staff. Included in this growth were Richard Isaly and Chuck Wilson. Rick and Chuck went on to initiate and implement our hazardous building materials, underground storage tank and environmental site assessment services in the late 1980’s.

Nearly 15 years later, in 2000, L&A hired microbiologist Karrie Bontrager in response to an increase in indoor air complaints. The Air Quality (AQ) group, under her direction, has completed the most LEED IAQ projects in the region, is entrenched in the healthcare industry and assists clients in resolving issues, such as Legionnaires Disease, with direct impact to human health.

In 2007, L&A created the NEPA group to assist our clients in navigating the environmental requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act and associated regulations. Susan Daniels and Tom Powell have assembled a full service team that is a leader in Ohio’s transportation sector and one of few firms in the State of Ohio to be certified in all twelve ODOT environmental categories.

Over the last three years, in response to infrastructure development in the energy and recreation sectors, our ecological and cultural resource consulting service lines were formalized. Capitalizing on L&A’s reputation, Susan and Karrie have built practices that include the full range of services required by our clients, with experience across all sectors.

Today, Lawhon’s environmental team of over 40 professionals completes more than 400 projects per year. As when founded, the L&A team is committed to providing the best responsive, innovative, sustainable solutions and technical staff to the clients we serve. Our successful history would not have been possible without the clients who place their trust in us and our dedicated and talented team.
