Environmental Scientist

Lawhon & Associates, Inc. (L&A) is seeking an energetic and self-motivated individual to join our Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) department. Responsibilities include project set-up, client and agency communication, project research, field work and technical reporting for Phase I and Phase II ESAs. This is a full-time position based in our Columbus, Ohio office.

As a member of L&A’s multi-disciplined team, you will be working directly with our recognized senior professionals and executive managers. The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of projects in the public and private sector including but not limited to: ESA screening, site assessments and investigation, and remediation and regulatory compliance. Projects may involve overnight travel to job sites throughout Ohio and surrounding states.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will possess a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a science-related field. One year of experience in environmental site assessments and knowledge of soil and groundwater sampling is desired.

  •  Sound understanding of wetland and stream ecology.

  •  A minimum of 3 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, natural resources or a related field. OR 2 years of experience with a Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Candidate must meet the minimum educational standard to obtain the ODOT Prequalification for Ecological Surveys.
  • Experience conducting wetland delineations and stream assessments.
  • Detailed working knowledge of NEPA and the related laws and authorities.
  • GPS data collection experience.
  • Excellent oral, written and analytical skills.
  • Ability to plan and manage multiple, demanding tasks under critical timeframes.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and motivated by the opportunity to help expand Lawhon’s ecological practice and work in an energetic and collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with a commitment to accuracy, detail, and timeliness.

  • Macroinvertebrate and/or endangered species survey experience is desirable.
  • Experience with a variety of infrastructure and development project types (e.g., transportation, energy, land management) with private and public sector clients is a plus.
